Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good internet speed for streaming?

Netflix recommends 15 Mbps for Full HD and 25 Mbps for 4K streaming. For Twitch or YouTube Live streaming (upload), you need at least 6 Mbps upload speed for 1080p 60fps. Use the Streamer mode above for a more accurate high-speed measurement.

What ping is good for gaming?

Under 30 ms is excellent for online gaming. 30โ€“60 ms is good for most games. Above 100 ms you may notice lag. Jitter (variation in ping) should be below 10 ms for a stable connection โ€” our test measures both.

Why is my speed test result lower than my plan?

Speed tests measure your actual throughput at the time of the test. Common causes of lower results: WiFi interference (try a wired connection), network congestion during peak hours, ISP throttling, or running other downloads simultaneously.

How is this different from Fast.com or Google Speed Test?

Unlike Fast.com (download only) or Google's embedded widget, this tool measures download, upload, ping and jitter together, shows your ISP and location, rates your connection for 8 real-world use cases, and saves your test history locally โ€” no account needed.

How fast should my upload speed be for working from home?

For video calls (Zoom, Teams, Google Meet) you need at least 3 Mbps upload. For sharing large files or using cloud services, 10+ Mbps upload is recommended. The quality rating panel above tells you instantly if your connection meets the threshold.

What speeds does Starlink get?

Starlink satellite internet typically delivers 50โ€“200 Mbps download and 10โ€“20 Mbps upload, with latency between 20โ€“60 ms โ€” much lower than traditional satellite. Use the Streamer / Gaming mode above for an accurate Starlink speed measurement, as it uses larger file sizes that better reflect real-world throughput.

How do I test my fiber internet speed?

Fiber connections (like Gigabit broadband) often exceed 500 Mbps. Standard speed tests may underestimate fiber speeds because they use small files. Select Streamer / Gaming mode which tests with up to 100MB files to get an accurate reading of your fiber or cable broadband speed.

How to Use the Internet Speed Test

Select a test mode at the top โ€” Quick Check, Standard Test, or Streamer / Gaming โ€” then press the Start Test button. The tool measures ping and jitter first, then runs download and upload speed tests using Cloudflare's global network. Results appear in real time as each phase completes.

Choosing the Right Test Mode

  • Quick Check (โšก): Uses smaller file sizes and fewer ping samples. Completes in about 10โ€“15 seconds. Good for a fast snapshot when you suspect a problem.
  • Standard Test (๐Ÿ“ถ): The default. Balances accuracy and speed with medium-sized files. Best for everyday broadband checks.
  • Streamer / Gaming (๐ŸŽฌ): Uses large files up to 100MB and 15 ping samples. More accurate for high-speed connections like Gigabit fiber, Starlink, or cable 500+ Mbps plans. Takes 30โ€“60 seconds.

Understanding Your Results

  • Download speed (Mbps): How fast data arrives at your device. Affects streaming, browsing, and downloads.
  • Upload speed (Mbps): How fast you can send data. Critical for video calls, live streaming, and cloud backups.
  • Ping (ms): The round-trip time to the test server. Lower is better. Under 30ms is excellent for gaming and video calls.
  • Jitter (ms): The variation in ping over multiple measurements. Low jitter means a stable connection. High jitter causes choppy video calls and rubber-banding in games even when ping is acceptable.

Tips for Accurate Results

  • Close other tabs and pause any downloads or streaming before testing โ€” other traffic lowers your measured speed.
  • For the most accurate reading, connect your device directly to your router via an ethernet cable and test on WiFi separately to measure wireless overhead.
  • Run the test 2โ€“3 times and compare results. Speed naturally varies throughout the day due to network congestion.
  • The Connection Quality panel rates your connection against 8 real-world use cases โ€” streaming, gaming, video calls, and more โ€” so you don't need to interpret the numbers yourself.
  • Results are saved to Test History automatically so you can track performance over time without signing in.

How the Test Works

Download speed is measured by fetching files of increasing size from Cloudflare's edge network and timing the transfer. Upload speed sends random data to Cloudflare's upload endpoint. Ping and jitter are calculated by making multiple timed requests to the Cloudflare endpoint and measuring the variance. All tests run entirely in your browser โ€” no app, plugin, or server-side component is required.
